
People are often told to smile when they are on camera, or in front of an audience, to show that they are friendly, nice people whom their audience would like to know. If there's nothing behind that smile, however--if the audience sees that you're only smiling because someone told you to--it can be off-putting, rather than inviting.
Don't think in terms of what people see: think rather of the relationship you want to have with your audience. You want to establish yourself as a welcoming host and see your audience as your guests. If you are oriented towards your audience in that fashion, how will you appear? Not as a scary clown...
