Know Your Audience

When preparing for a speech, presentation, or media interview, an important first step is determining who your audience will be: industry establishment or start-ups? Businesspeople or laypersons? Friends or strangers?

You should be tailoring your content to your audience and speaking to their needs and understanding. The better you understand who they are, the better you'll be able to prepare how to speak to them...and persuade them.
